Slight update here. If you receive a warning from google like:

"We've detected that your server returns a status of 200 (found  
successfully) for pages that don't exist."... NOT VERIFIED.

Be sure that you have entered your site address correctly when you were in the ADD SITE stage.  If you entered a typo, when google comes to check the site it will be forwarded to the sign-in page will return a status of 200.
